First Aid for Kids

Learn how to be a helper! With these simple steps, you can keep yourself and your friends safe until a grown-up arrives.

The 3 C's — Easy to Remember!

Whenever someone is hurt, follow these three steps in order.

Check

#1

Look carefully. Is the person awake? Can they talk to you? Make sure it is safe for you to be there too.

Call

#2

Shout for a grown-up straight away. If no one comes, call 999 and ask for an ambulance. Tell them where you are.

Care

#3

Stay with the person. Talk to them in a calm voice. Keep them still until a grown-up or helper arrives.

What Would You Do?

A Cut or Scrape

  1. 1Tell a grown-up.
  2. 2Wash your hands first so you do not make it sore.
  3. 3Press a clean cloth on it to stop the bleeding.
  4. 4A grown-up can put on a plaster.

Someone Has Fallen

  1. 1Do not try to move them — they might be hurt inside.
  2. 2Kneel next to them and talk to them.
  3. 3Tell them to lie still and that help is coming.
  4. 4Call a grown-up or 999.

A Nose Bleed

  1. 1Sit up and lean your head slightly forward (not back!).
  2. 2Pinch the soft part of your nose for 10 minutes.
  3. 3Breathe through your mouth.
  4. 4Tell a grown-up if it does not stop.

Calling 999

  1. 1Stay calm. Take a big breath.
  2. 2Say your name and where you are (the address or a landmark).
  3. 3Say what happened and who is hurt.
  4. 4Do not hang up until the helper tells you to.

Top Tips for Young Helpers

Your most important job is to stay safe and get a grown-up.
